Rodent Control Treatment in Cincinnati

Rodents can cause significant distress to homeowners in Cincinnati. One reason for this is because they are a lot bigger than typical household pests. It can be downright frightening to see a rodent scurry through your house. But, their size is not the main reason that these types of pest should strike fear in your heart. The real threats that rodents pose are to your home and to your family. Rodents can cause serious damage to your property and spread disease to your family. The seriousness of these threats makes effective rodent control treatment very important.

Damage to your home

One of the biggest reasons proper rodent control is essential is because they can do serious damage to your home. Rodents are willing to chew on just about anything. They’re known to chew through wires inside walls and those connected to electronics and appliances. This type of damage can create potential fire hazards in your property. Rodents will also damage items inside your house by chewing through cardboard and paper to get materials to build their nests. Even seemingly strong building materials like sheetrock can be chewed through by rodents. In order to protect your home from damage you need to have a rodent control treatment plan that works.

Spread disease to your family

Effective rodent control can protect your family from the threat of diseases that can be spread by rodents. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) lists eleven diseases that can be transmitted directly to humans from rodents and fifteen diseases that are indirectly transmitted by rodents. These lists contain some serious diseases that you do not want anyone in your family exposed to. Rodents can transmit disease directly by contaminating your food supply. When they chew into the food packages in your pantry they can leave behind urine and feces that spread disease. In addition, direct contact with rodent urine or droppings and breathing in dust contaminated with them can transmit disease. Keeping your home rodent-free will go a long way toward protecting the health of your family.

Rodent control treatment options

There are two basic options for rodent control treatment: traps and poison. Traps are designed to catch rodents and either kill them or contain them until you (or your pest control professional) can remove them from the property. One benefit of using traps is the fact that you know where the rodents are. You do not have to worry about them crawling into some hidden space to die and causing your home to smell bad. You can remove any rodent that gets caught in the trap’s snare and set it up to catch the next one. Poison is the second broad category for rodent control. There is a wide range of options for killing off rodents with poison. If you choose to work with a pest control professional they will have a recommendation for the poison you should use based on your situation and their expertise. A benefit of using poison is that you can get to more rodents than you can with traps. Once a trap is full it cannot catch another rodent until you remove the old one and re-set the trap. You can easily set out enough poison to kill off several rodents at a time.

In Cincinnati you can get help with all of your rodent control treatment needs from the experts at Sure Thing Pest Control. We have the training, expertise, and tools necessary to protect your home and your family from the threat of a rodent infestation.

Cockroaches in your Cincinnati home?

If you have roaches in your Cincinnati home, you know how difficult it can be to get rid of them. Not only are they disgusting and pesky creatures, but they seem to be invincible. If you’re desperate for relief from your roach infestation, take a look below for some tips and tricks on how to get rid of
them once and for all.

Keep It Clean

Food, water, and shelter are the major reason roaches like to come inside and make themselves at home. If you make these things easily accessible, chances are you will have a few roach visitors before too long. Keeping your home as clean as possible is the best defense against a roach invasion.

Cleanliness in your kitchen is especially important. Sweep and mop your floor on a regular basis, and be sure to get under baseboards, the stove and oven, and the refrigerator. Wipe up crumbs and spills immediately. Never leave dishes in the sink for long, especially overnight. Roaches love to come out and roam after everyone has gone to sleep, so a sink full of dirty dishes is like a
roach party waiting to happen.

Don’t leave food out on the counters – in fact, food storage is a big deal when it comes to roach prevention. Store food in airtight containers made of glass, plastic, or metal. Make sure you are checking all the nooks and crannies in your kitchen for crumbs that have been left behind. Any food source is fair game.

Vacuum in all other rooms on a regular basis, especially in areas where you eat. Crumbs that gather in the carpet are yet another food source for a roach. Wipe down crumbs or spills in these areas immediately as well.

Take Out The Trash

Your trash may be disgusting to you, but it’s one of a roaches favorite spots. If your trash doesn’t have a lid, this is an easy-access buffet for a roach. Invest in a trashcan with a lid, and empty your trash regularly. If you throw away food or liquids, take it out as quickly as possible. It’s also a
good idea to wipe your trashcans down on a regular basis. The food and gunk that builds up on and underneath these bins is just the kind of thing that roaches like to find.

Clear The Clutter

Piles of books, newspapers, magazines, and other items provide great hiding spots for roaches to hang out. Roaches aren’t picky about their meals, either. Paper, cardboard, and other non-food items are quite appetizing to a hungry roach. Keep clutter to a minimum, and never allow things to pile up on the floor. Rifle through stacks of books and magazines on a regular basis to make sure no one is hiding out inside. You might be surprised what you find.

Find Their Entry Point

Take a good look around your home for any cracks or gaps from the outside in. While roaches are great at finding miniscule spots to enter, a large gap that is visible to the naked eye is like an open invitation. Check around windows, doors, and any other entry points, and install weather stripping if
you can see sunlight. Also, make sure you have good screens that are free of holes or tears. Seal up any other cracks that you find with caulking, or call in a repairman if it’s a big enough hole that it requires a professional fix.

Bait Them

If you don’t feel like you have a full-blown infestation at this point and have only seen a few stragglers, you can attempt to take a do-it-yourself approach. However, it’s important to note that where you see one roach, there are likely many, many others. If you’re determined, though, invest in some roach bait. Roaches will eat the poisonous bait and take it back to share with their friends. Eventually, this should kill the majority of them off.

Place the bait where you know they will encounter it: areas where you have seen activity, or in the kitchen where they will likely be hunting for food. It’s important to note that this isn’t the quickest method, and it may take several weeks to kill them off. Also, always use care when using DIY pest
control methods. Keep children and pets away from the bait, and use care to keep it away from your food sources.

Call The Experts

If your methods have been unsuccessful, or you simply want to get the job done as quickly as possible, call in a pest control expert to help you out. These professionals likely have years of experience and will know exactly how to treat the issue to get your home roach-free as quickly and efficiently as possible. Roaches are notoriously difficult to exterminate, so using a professional technician is often not only your best bet, but the only one that will get the job done for good.

Roaches are most certainly an unpleasant intrusion in your home, but they are unfortunately one that most of us will encounter at some point in our lives. If you are prepared and knowledgeable,
getting rid of roaches in your home doesn’t have to be a nightmare. Follow the above tips and your home should be free of roach visitors before you know it.

A Guide to Mosquito Prevention in Cincinnati

Mosquitoes are found all around the world and especially in Cincinnati with the moist climate we have. Yes, they are an announce that can ruin an evening outdoor with the itchy bites that they leave behind. But they pose a far more serious health threat. In fact, mosquitoes are considered one of the deadliest animals in the world because of the diseases they can transmit. In the Cincinnati region mosquitoes are known for carrying West Nile Virus, Dengue Fever and now growing concerns about Zika making its way to Cincinnati with one case being reported last year.

Mosquito Habits
Before we dive into tips for preventing mosquitoes in Cincinnati we need to have a better understanding of their habits so we can begin to think like a mosquito. Mosquitoes are typically out during dawn and dusk when it’s cooler. Something interesting about mosquitoes is only the female bites and feed on humans.  They need a blood meal in order to lay fertile eggs in water. In addition to feeding on blood, both the male and female mosquitoes feed on nectar from flowers as their main source of energy.

Mosquito Attractions
The question we get all the time is how come I get bit all the time and my significate other doesn’t? Studies have shown that there are certain factors that have an effect on how attractive a person is to mosquitoes. Some factors that can be avoided that have been found to attract mosquitoes are dark-colored clothing and perfumes. While other factors such as blood type, body temperatures, bacteria and oils on the skin have been found to be attractive to mosquitoes. These factors are out of our control because it’s part of our bodily makeup, but there are somethings you can do to lower your chances of getting bit.

Mosquito Breeding Areas
Preventing mosquito around your home first starts with removing standing water from around your home. Mosquitoes in Cincinnati lay their eggs in standing water where the larvae will then develop. This is why it’s important to empty containers such as flowerpots, pool covers, baby pools after rainstorms, buckets, empty tires and wheel barrels to just name a few common spots. Water in birdbaths should also be regularly changed as well.

Mosquito Prevention
Most mosquitoes in Cincinnati are active mostly around dusk and dawn, so avoiding the outdoors during these times will reduce the likelihood of getting bit. But this just isn’t feasible we obviously want to enjoy our backyards, this is why we recommend wearing long sleeves, long pants and using insect repellent that containing 20 percent DEET when you’re outside to protect yourself from mosquitoes. Additionally placing a small fan outside can help reduce mosquitoes since they’re not strong flyers, lighting citronella candles and Tiki Torches can also help to repel them away from your outdoor environment.

Mosquito Treatments
Sure Thing Pest Control provides a mosquito treatment program that runs from April through Sept. / Oct. which helps to greatly reduce the numbers of mosquitoes around your home. This is a service we starting providing about 10 years ago for special events such as parties, festivals, and sporting events. We then starting providing this to our residential customers about 5 years ago with the rising and growing concern of West Nile virus, Dengue fever and most recently Zika finding its way into the Cincinnati region. We’ve seen great results with this program in our own yards and our customers have told us it has helped them to regain their outdoor environment again. 7 Reasons You Need Pest Control in Winter

Pest Control in the Winter?

With the winter- time cold temperatures that bring snow and ice to the Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky area pest control may be the last thing on your mind. But don’t be fooled by thinking all the pests have frozen and died! You might think winter is a time when nature takes a rest, but things are not always as they seem. In the world of pest control, there is still a lot of work to do. Pests such as Black Widows and other spiders, ants, cockroaches, termites, bedbugs, fleas, rats, mice and the like, may slow down a bit, but they don’t go away. In fact, they continue feeding, growing and multiplying, often in the warmth and comfort of our homes.

Warmer days also get pest moving again, when outside temperatures are on a warming trend, outdoor pests, such as Carpenter Ants, House Ants, Wasps, bees, and occasional invaders like millipedes, and stink bugs, continue their activities. It is a wise practice to maintain your protective barrier guarantee on a quarterly basis. Cutting your pest control service during the winter season as a cost-saving measure gives pests a head start for the spring, and may void warranted services.

7 reasons to continue your pest control service through the winter

  1. Autumn invading pests living inside the walls are not affected by the cold temperatures outdoors.
  2. Termites, carpenter ants, cockroaches, silverfish, and many other insects can thrive indoors as the weather is always pleasant inside!
  3. Attics provide shelter to other insects such as wasps and spiders, as they try to escape the cold.
  4. Rodents can find their way into your home if all entry points are not sealed off.
  5. When we perform a meticulous inspection of your home, inside and out, we ensure that no pest related issues are present and identify any conditions that might increase the risk of future pest problems.
  6. Inspecting and/or treating entry points like doors, windows, and weep holes provide lasting protection and ready your home for the emergence of pests in spring.
  7. When we remove spider webs, egg cases, wasp nests, and mud dauber nests, we prevent them from reemerging when the weather warms.

Remember, invasive pests want to be indoors during the winter for the same reasons you do! It is important to perform a comprehensive winter pest control treatment to insure that your home is protected year-round.
